Police are searching for a suspect after an officer was injured during an interaction in Port Hope, Ont. on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred just before 5 p.m. at the drive-thru of a McDonald’s near Highways 401 and 28, where an alleged stolen vehicle was spotted.
Officers arrived and tried to make contact with the driver.
“As a result, one of our officers was injured and transported to Northumberland Hills Hospital,” Port Hope police said in news release. They did not say the nature of the officer’s injury.
The officer was treated and has been released from hospital.
“We are extremely fortunate and appreciative that our officer will recover from her injuries,” police said.
They added that the Special Investigations Unit (SIU), Ontario’s police watchdog that investigates the conduct of police that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person, has invoked its mandate.
Meanwhile, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will be taking over the criminal investigation.
There is no information on the suspect, but the OPP issued an advisory on Twitter, asking for the public’s help in locating a black 2004 GMC Canyon Commercial truck with a licence plate “BE38852.”
They warned not to approach the vehicle or driver and instead call 911.
Kawartha police also issued a similar plea, saying the vehicle, which has damage to the front end, was last seen in Lindsay.
