One person has died after a two-alarm fire in Scarborough’s West Hill neighbourhood on Saturday.

The fire broke out in a unit on the 5th floor of a 13-storey apartment building at the intersection of Kingston Road and Lawrence Avenue just before 3:30 p.m.

Firefighters encountered heavy smoke when they arrived at the scene.

A CP24 viewer tweeted a video showing black smoke billowing out of the building.

Toronto Fire said one person without vital signs was removed from the unit.

The individual was taken to hospital in life-threatening condition. Toronto Fire later confirmed that the victim had died.

Two other tenants were assessed at the scene.

Toronto Fire said the blaze had been knocked down, but crews are still dealing with smoke in the building.

TTC buses have been called to serve as temporary shelters for displaced residents.

The cause and origin of the fire are unknown.

Toronto Fire said its investigators have been engaged and are cooperating with police and the Office of the Fire Marshal.
