An Algoma University professor is facing multiple charges in the alleged assaults of five students.

Sault Ste. Marie police say they launched an investigation in mid-December into complaints against a computer science part-time contract professor, who has worked at the university since 2008.

Police allege the man assaulted and struck five people “for a sexual purpose.”

They say the victims were students at the university during the time of the alleged assaults, which are said to have occurred between September 2021 and this January.

Police say a 56-year-old man was arrested Friday and charged with two counts of sexual assault with a weapon and five counts of assault.

The university says the professor is currently suspended from all his duties and prohibited from visiting campus or contacting students.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published Jan. 13, 2023.
