Many media and observers would like Scuderia Ferrari to choose to name Charles Leclerc as the No. 1 driver this season, with Carlos Sainz having dropped out of the driver standings.
For his part, the former F1 driver Gerhard Berger is against the establishment of an internal hierarchy. He thus hopes not to see any team instructions as long as the two pilots are mathematically in the race for the championship.
« We are a sport and I think in a sport as long as both drivers can win the championship we shouldn’t interfere, that’s my personal opinion, » said the Austrian.
« Frank Williams was maybe the pioneer. He didn’t care who won: Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, whatever. There could be orders at the last race of the season, but not before. »
« People now say they ‘don’t know what they’re doing’ at Ferrari. But maybe they learned from the day Rubens Barrichello had to let Michael Schumacher pass at the Red Bull Ring. they say ‘sport first’. If that’s the case, I’m very happy. »
Berger, on the other hand, is happy to see the Scuderia battling Red Bull at the front, and he hopes Mercedes F1 can soon join in the fight for victory.
« I think it would be great for F1, we need that and more. It would take two more teams to be able to fight up front. But after the years of dominance by Michael Schumacher or Lewis Hamilton, we We are really happy to see two different teams fighting for the titles for two seasons. »
« It’s fantastic that Ferrari is back in the fight. And it would be even better if Mercedes were involved as well. But we are seeing some good racing. I think F1 is back and the fans deserve it. »
