Guanyu Zhou, the only rookie in F1 this year, a driver for Alfa Romeo, has objectively performed well so far this season and the Chinese driver says he has even surprised himself at times in his first Formula 1 campaign.
Coming from Alpine, the 23-year-old was initially seen as a money-bound choice at Alfa Romeo. But Zhou quickly distinguished himself, with points in his first Grand Prix in Bahrain. And, as the season progresses, pure performances approaching those of Valtteri Bottas, a benchmark.
« Overall, I’m quite happy with my F1 debut, » he confides during the summer break.
« Surprising everyone in F1 feels good but coming into Q3 is certainly a big surprise for me too, because I didn’t think in my first year that we had many chances to do that. So it’s a pretty good achievement, and good news for me for the future. »
« But on the other hand, my expectations of myself are obviously higher, because even though I’m still a rookie, if I miss Q1, I still feel pretty upset. At the start of the year, I I would have said ok, but now I feel like Q2 is still my minimum target, even though the field is quite tight. »
« I think that overall most of the objectives were met. Maybe exceeded, because with all these retirements and the crash at Silverstone, which I didn’t ask for, I could have done much better on the chart of accounts, » he admits.
« There are always things that I want to understand better with the team. Firstly, the starts. As a team, we struggle a lot with that. It’s very inconsistent, even inconsistent or unpredictable. It’s something we want to improve on a team level, and hopefully that will be fixed very soon. »
« For the rest, it’s above all a question of experience, of learning. That’s why I minimize errors for my 1st year because driving is essential. »
