Toto Wolff, the director of Mercedes F1, gave a short review of the season, after the closing of the factory this weekend. Before joining one or the other beach on the globe, he looks back on the very difficult beginnings of the W13 during the first months but also the very interesting recovery of the last weeks for the rest of the season and for 2023.
« The start of the season has really not been good, there is no other way to describe it. If you win the championship in December, but four months later you are not struggling with those up front , it’s frustrating, » admits the Austrian.
« Since then we’ve had a rollercoaster ride. We’ve been on the podium in almost every race, we were strong on Sunday, but never quite there in qualifying, and the gap was just too big. »
When asked if he has any positive things to note all the same, he stays on the pessimistic side to begin with.
« Not much has actually gone well, at least if you concede that your goal was to fight for the world championship. »
« But we have to take the positive. As we’ve said in the past, it’s the losses that you learn the most from, and that’s what happened. Our car was really tough at the start of the season. year. Sometimes it never seemed to get better, and I think the lessons we learned, those hard lessons, will help us for years to come. »
« Also, the time invested is not just going to be used for a single weekend or a single year. We plan to continue to develop for two, five, ten years, and perhaps the lessons, and the tenacity that we have demonstrated this year, will benefit us. »
« Now it’s about figuring out what happened and in the second half of the season, if we improve our pace in qualifying, which I hope, we might be able to go for the win. »
